{"id":1155,"date":"2016-07-27T19:46:10","date_gmt":"2016-07-27T19:46:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.susaneleyfineart.com\/news\/?p=1155"},"modified":"2016-08-30T16:35:42","modified_gmt":"2016-08-30T16:35:42","slug":"john-jonas-gruen-photographer-and-critic-dies-at-89","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.susaneleyfineart.com\/news\/?p=1155","title":{"rendered":"John Jonas Gruen, Photographer and Critic, Dies at 89"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7hon9\" data-offset-key=\"6hj9b-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"6hj9b-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6hj9b-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">We are saddened to announce\u00a0that <\/span><\/span><span class=\"_5u8u\" spellcheck=\"false\" data-offset-key=\"6hj9b-1-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6hj9b-1-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">John Jonas Gruen<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6hj9b-2-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">, an historic photographer, cultural critic, and friend of Susan Eley Fine Art, has passed away this week.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"6hj9b-0-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"7hon9\" data-offset-key=\"4j4ij-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"4j4ij-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"4j4ij-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">SEFA featured Gruen in &#8216;Young in the Hamptons&#8217; in September 2013, a solo show of 49\u00a0photographs of the great artists and thinkers of the 1950s and 60s art scene, including Jasper Johns, Robert Rauchenberg, Willem de Kooning, and many more.\u00a0This was<\/span><\/span>\u00a0the first showing in a New York City gallery of these portraits as an entity. Many of the images had been published in 2003 in the book <em>Young In the Hamptons<\/em>, and the Whitney Museum of American Art owns about 300 images from the series.<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"4j4ij-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"4j4ij-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"4j4ij-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">What is most striking about this series are not the famous faces, but the lives that these artists formed together.
